A Picture is Worth 1000 Words?

I needed a camera to take to the American Royal BBQ last night (my husband's band was playing). And I was experiencing a camera deficit. My point-and-shoot is kinda broken. It still takes pictures but the LCD screen is busted (as a result of being squished between my butt and an amusement park ride this summer). And my DSLR is at my sister's house.

So, I borrowed M's camera (which was a hand-me-down point-and-shoot we gave her for her birthday). Before I left though, I cleared her memory card. Saved its contents to my hard drive and wiped it clean.

Today, I sat down to look at what she shot. Here is life from the perspective of my 6-year-old:











Stuffed animals. Dolls. And herself. A pretty apt description of her world, at least as she currently knows it.

And then I also found this little gem:

Heart eyes

One of my dearest friends lives in LA. We've been friends for over 20 years and she's the most generous, loving and fun friend you could wish for. It breaks my heart that we live so far apart, but at the same time when we do see each other it's so special, that in a way I wouldn't have it any other way. Anyway, my sister, who now also lives in LA, was expecting her second child back in April, and was having a baby shower, and my BBF thought that I should come out for it - as a surprise. So I went out there for a whole week on my own, without my boys. That meant that I could go and do all those things that they wouldn't be as into, like going to exhibitions, check out stores and have a karaoke session for old times sakes. It was an amazing seven days where I got to reconnect with aspects of myself that I somehow had buried and neglected since motherhood. Lots of Candles and Holidays

Yesterday was my birthday. When I walked into the kitchen in the morning, my seven year old said: "Mom! When did you get taller?" Gee, I wonder if he's heard that on a birthday or two himself... ************** Also from G: Mom, can we celebrate Hanukkah? No, probably not. We're not Jewish. Oh, darn it! And we don't even speak Jewish... ************** That was followed the next day by: Mom, can we PLEASE just TRY to celebrate Hanukkah and Kwanzaa? ************** Busy day today. We went and bought a new car for me. Updated version of what I had before. New color. And fancy wheels. Mama's got rims. And then we took the big kids to see the Rockettes Christmas show downtown. It was really good. I expected more kids but this was truly an all ages show. Tons of adults there without children. As we crossed the street from the parking garage to the arena, G commented that " Sprint Center looks like a disco ball cut in half ." And I looked. And it does.

I am wonderfully amazed that my children have no idea why today is so historic. In their lives, it is not unusual that the President of the United States is African-American. And that is so cool that I choke back tears just to type it. Mostly, they are excited that two little kids are moving into the White House today. To them, that is the coolest thing that will happen on this day. And that innocent thought alone is pretty freaking awesome. I love it. I am hopeful today that the President will have an administration that will give his detractors little to complain about, one that will stand up to the historic position his election created, one that will make those who went before him and those who elected him proud, one that will make this country better than it is today. He can certainly talk the talk. Now is the time to walk the walk. For my children, I hope that the excitement continues well beyond today. (And I just saw Malia Obama videotaping her dad giving his inaugural addres...
